Summary

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Lisa Gardner, a propulsive thriller featuring an ordinary woman who will stop at nothing to find the missing people that the rest of the world has forgotten

Frankie Elkin is an average middle-aged woman, a recovering alcoholic with more regrets than belongings。 But she spends her life doing what no one else will--searching for missing people the world has stopped looking for。 When the police have given up, when the public no longer remembers, when the media has never paid attention, Frankie starts looking。

A new case brings her to Mattapan, a Boston neighborhood with a rough reputation。 She is searching for Angelique Badeau, a Haitian teenager who vanished from her high school months earlier。 Resistance from the Boston PD and the victim's wary family tells Frankie she's on her own--and she soon learns she's asking questions someone doesn't want answered。 But Frankie will stop at nothing to discover the truth, even if it means the next person to go missing could be her。

I enjoyed this story; it was okay。 Not great, but entertaining, with a twist as to the main character's motivations。 I know I've read Lisa Gardner before, and I would again。 I enjoyed this story; it was okay。 Not great, but entertaining, with a twist as to the main character's motivations。 I know I've read Lisa Gardner before, and I would again。 。。。more

Couldn’t put this one down。 I so enjoyed getting to know Frankie Elkin。 She’s certainly not your typical mystery novel heroine。

I am not a huge fan of detective type stories, but have always loved the ones by Lisa Gardner。 She is one of my favorite and I will always jump at her new releases。 Sadly, I just did not love the story around this one and the direction it took。This started off strong and I thought I was going to devour this one。 However; it really slowed down with not much happening most of the middle。 It all detective work with not much added in。 I was just not interested in all the information around the case I am not a huge fan of detective type stories, but have always loved the ones by Lisa Gardner。 She is one of my favorite and I will always jump at her new releases。 Sadly, I just did not love the story around this one and the direction it took。This started off strong and I thought I was going to devour this one。 However; it really slowed down with not much happening most of the middle。 It all detective work with not much added in。 I was just not interested in all the information around the case either。 I did enjoy the brother being involved in the clues and finding his sister。 Overall, I just wanted more。 This one was just not for me。 。。。more

No rating - I could not finish the book。I like Lisa Gardner - a lot。I *don't* like First Person/Present Tense。I will not read any books FP/PT。 If I had known this one was like *that* I wouldn't have requested it from the library and waited weeks to get it。 No rating - I could not finish the book。I like Lisa Gardner - a lot。I *don't* like First Person/Present Tense。I will not read any books FP/PT。 If I had known this one was like *that* I wouldn't have requested it from the library and waited weeks to get it。 。。。more

Yes, please! Before She Disappeared features a truly unique and interesting protagonist。 Frankie searches to find answers as to what has happened to some of the missing people across America - especially people of color。 She doesn’t do it for reward and lives a very humble and limited lifestyle。 Everything she owns fits into one suitcase。 The descriptions of the Boston suburb, Mattepan, felt completely realistic。As much as I liked Frankie, and as much as I liked this book, I hate to say it but I found the ending to be not as satisfying as the rest of the book。 Having said that, I really, really hope there will be another Frankie Elkin book!In an afterward, Lisa Gardner says she discovered “an entire world of amateurs who seek to make a difference by working missing persons cold cases。” She also spent time researching the locale and says that Haitian meat pies are her new favorite food。😊 。。。more

Love the new character, and hope more books are published with her as the protagonist。

I began this listen before realizing the setting was local to me; which makes this work of crime fiction all the more engaging。 With @hillatious as the narrator, author @lisagardnerbks ‘s work, #BeforeSheDisappeared ,- (by all accounts a page turner for those who like introspective intrigue) - is leveled up as an unlikely and imperfect independent investigator walks a self-made beat along the streets of Mattapan, aiming to bring a missing young woman home。。。

Good Characters Good characters。 If Frankie’s alcoholic past and Paul become repetitious in future books that will kill the series。 Parts of this story border being believable but overall it hangs together。

I loved the tenacity of Frankie。 Her back story is heartbreaking。 While the premise of her going from place to place to find missing people was somewhat strange to comprehend she was committed even when her life is in danger。 At the end kind of wishful that she would have stayed with the people who have come to accept her and care about her。 But I guess on the new missing people

Enjoyed as I do so many Lisa Gardner books。 Finished in one day which doesn’t always happen for me。 My only problem is no knowing all that supposedly went on before with Paul。 Maybe I missed something from a former book。

The storyline kept me guessing until the end。 I hope this is the beginning of a new series。 Being set in Boston, there are potential crossovers with Dee Dee and Flora。 I would love to see the three strong women crime fighters get together。 No criminal would be able to stop them!

Julie Singer

I like this new character, Frankie! Good story。

Compelling and fascinating readFrankie is as real as it gets I’ve never had an alcohol problem but now I feel like I genuinely understand the meaning of one day at a time。 The characters are well developed and you don’t want to put down this book。

A great crime thriller。 Frankie made for a main character you can root for, getting by as best she can and holding her past demons at bay。 Intriguing mystery that kept the surprises coming。

I really love Lisa Gardner and have read many of her books。 I was super excited to read a thriller/ suspense book because it has been awhile since I read one in this genre。 After starting this book, I realized why this is one of my favorite genres to read。 I felt like I couldn't put it down。 Whenever I had a free moment, I would pick it up。 Especially with the last half of the book, I felt that I couldn't wait to get back to it and find out what happens。 To be honest, I feel that I have enjoyed I really love Lisa Gardner and have read many of her books。 I was super excited to read a thriller/ suspense book because it has been awhile since I read one in this genre。 After starting this book, I realized why this is one of my favorite genres to read。 I felt like I couldn't put it down。 Whenever I had a free moment, I would pick it up。 Especially with the last half of the book, I felt that I couldn't wait to get back to it and find out what happens。 To be honest, I feel that I have enjoyed other of her books more, but this book certainly did not disappoint。 I really liked that it didn't focus on a detective trying to find a missing person, as many of her books do。 Frankie was just a woman who wanted to find missing people when the police gave up。 I would really like to see Lisa write more stories with Frankie in it。 The concept of this book was definitely interesting and definitely not like any other book I had read, which was made it so interesting- two girls kidnapped because of their skills of making fake IDs, website, etc。 Not sure if it was favorite storyline I read, but I did find it interesting as it was something I hadn't read before。 Definitely would recommend this to someone who is a fan of Lisa Gardner as her books never disappoint! 。。。more

Damaged but determined Frankie Elkin comes to Mattapan a rough Boston Neighborhood to find a mission girl。 That’s what she does finds cold cases and immerses herself into the neighborhood and the lives of the family of the Haitian teenager Angelique Badeau who has been missing almost a year。 Great read great dialogue her conversations reveal clues to the mystery。

MM

boring/slow/uninteresting main character - a waste of time。 First book of hers that I thought was this bad。

Avid Reader

Excellent stand-alone mystery by Lisa Gardner。 Great new heroine, flawed and damaged yet completely empathetic。 Complex unexpected plot line and well rounded characters。 I am a complete fan of hers and snaffle up everything she writes, but this was particularly good and a great introduction to some of her, fairly long, series。

Adrianne M

Loved it。 Hope Frankie gets her own series。

Nick

This was good- this was real good! Maybe we’ll see another Frankie book。 I’d love to see at least an appearance。。。

Gardner's storytelling just keeps getting better and her books are becoming increasingly difficult to put down。。。 Yay!! Burned through this one and had quite a swell time doing so。 A solidly diggable four stars。 Gardner's storytelling just keeps getting better and her books are becoming increasingly difficult to put down。。。 Yay!!
